Getting Started
Download the App
StoryFlow is a free desktop application available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Download it from our homepage and install it on your computer.
Set Up Your API Key
StoryFlow uses Google Gemini for AI text generation. Go to Settings and enter your Gemini API key. You can get a free API key from Google AI Studio.
Create Your First Book
Click 'New Book' to start. You'll begin in the brainstorming phase where you can chat with AI to develop your book concept.
The 5-Phase Workflow
1. Brainstorming
Chat with AI to develop your book idea. The AI asks thoughtful questions about genre, themes, characters, and plot to help shape your story concept.
2. Outlining
Generate a detailed chapter-by-chapter outline. The AI creates story arcs, character development beats, and thematic progression based on your brainstorming session.
3. Refining
Review and adjust your outline and characters before writing. Make changes to chapter summaries, add or remove chapters, and finalize character details.
4. Writing
Generate chapters one at a time or use 'Finish Book' to write all remaining chapters. The AI maintains consistency throughout your story.
5. Completed
Your book is finished. Export as PDF, publish to the bookstore, or continue editing chapters as needed.
Character Management
AI-Generated Characters
During brainstorming and outlining, AI generates detailed character profiles including names, backgrounds, personality traits, and roles in your story.
Edit Character Details
Click on any character to view and edit their profile. You can modify names, descriptions, and other details at any time.
Character Consistency
The AI references your character profiles when writing chapters, ensuring consistent portrayal throughout your book.
Writing Chapters
Write One Chapter
Click 'Write Chapter' on any unwritten chapter to generate it. The AI uses your outline and previous chapters to maintain story continuity.
Finish Book
Use 'Finish Book' to automatically write all remaining chapters in sequence. Progress is saved as each chapter completes.
Edit Chapters
Click on any written chapter to view and edit its content. Changes are saved automatically.
Regenerate Chapters
Not happy with a chapter? Delete it and regenerate to get a new version based on your outline.
Exporting Your Book
PDF Export
Export your completed book as a professionally formatted PDF. Includes title page, table of contents, and all chapters.
Cover Images
Generate AI cover images for your book. Multiple styles are available to match your genre and tone.
Publishing to Bookstore
Publish Your Book
Share your completed book with readers worldwide. Click 'Publish' to upload your book to the StoryFlow Bookstore.
Set Your Price
Choose to offer your book for free or set a price. Pricing is set in USD.
Manage Published Books
Update your published book's details, cover image, or price at any time from the desktop app.
Book Series
Create a Series
Group related books into a series. When creating a new book, you can add it to an existing series or create a new one.
Series Continuity
When writing books in a series, the AI can reference previous books to maintain character and plot continuity.
Using the Bookstore
Browse Books
Explore books created by other StoryFlow authors. Filter by genre or search by title, author, or description.
Preview Books
Read the first few chapters of any book for free before purchasing.
Download Books
Purchase books to download as PDF. Your purchases are saved to your library for easy access.
Your Library
Sign in to access your library of purchased books. Download your books anytime from any device.
Settings
API Key
Enter your Google Gemini API key to enable AI features. Get a free key from Google AI Studio.
Database Location
Choose where to store your data. Use the Documents folder for iCloud sync across devices.
Author Name
Set your default author name for new books and publishing.
